"What if we applied our
imaginations to what can happen?"
Tom Morey

From the mind of
Tom Morey

The following is an excerpt from an article Tom wrote in the 70's. It's amazing how "right-on" he was!

I’m weirdness from the future and the past. I am the spirits of Einstein, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Simmons, taken possession, temporarily, of the innocent body known here on earth as Tom Morey. I (we, really) am looking at your surfboards of today and am thinking they are junk. Maybe you’re impressed (as these boards are possibly the best you’ve ever known) (possibly, as even that is questionable,) but really not too impressive. We Weirdos realize that anything imaginable is possible. Very little imagination is reflected in “today’s board.” It is basically the same as “yesterday’s board,” the board surfed last year, the year before that, the year before that, the year before that and the year before that. Yes, it’s true that today’s board is shorter, flatter, more hard rails here, less “V” there, maybe fatter or whatever than before, smaller fin or more kick, two fins, etc. But honestly, huh? You know, really, it’s basically the same as before.

In actuality a guy paddles one of these “modern tools for total involvement” (or whatever the latest rap is) out to the lineup at the stupendous speed of about one mile per hour. (A good swimmer with fins can often get out faster.) He rides in at perhaps 10-15 mph. Occasionally, he may hit 20, even 25 mph., on really good, really large waves. The waves he rides have to be almost breaking before he can pick one up. Rides are all relatively short. (No sense completing the ride to the beach, as paddling back out again is such a drag.) The number of places where surfing is done is restricted by wave conditions to a few sites throughout the world. Look… dream it up some. Let your imagination run away with you more. Imagine better, and it will. Daydream optimistically. Understand, for example, that all the world’s oil supplies still have not been found. Know that much of the world’s best property is still to be purchased and resold for a profit (if that’s your interest.) Realize that almost all the great inventions have not yet even been dreamed of. The surface has only just been scratched. Imagine, for example, boards which will maneuver super well and which paddle at say 10 mph, surf at 50 mph! Do you not realize that if you all imagined superior boards being innovated that they would be? It’s not important that you imagine how they look or work or ride or any of that stuff. It’s only important that you imagine that they will come about. It all helps if you discuss your imaginings with each other. In fact, it helps most if you imagine that it is some date in the reasonably in the near future. Imagine that they have already come about and that you have one and are delighted with it.

Today’s manufacturer knows of silicone rubber, injection molding of lexan polypropylene, butyrate and nylon. He has some understanding of filament winding. He has seen feathers, fish scales and rocks. He’s familiar with aluminum, magnesium; in fact, quadrillions of materials and manufacturing techniques. Yet, still the tendency is to plod along using only polyester resin and fiberglass boat cloth. Would God make men without eyelashes, toe nails, and saliva? Dogs without fur and tongues? Skunks without smelly liquids? How then will anything really clever or great come from man if he relies exclusively on a few simple techniques for shaping rounds and flats into foam and smoothing and strengthening the foam with “good ol’ fiberglass?”

Let’s take our imaginations out of gear with only what will probably happen, and bend our heads a little with what can happen if we apply our imaginations to what can happen if we apply our imaginations to what can happen if we apply our imaginations to what can happen if…etc…
